Named after a Dostoyevsky character, Marfa is the setting for James Dean’s last movie “Giant”. The tiny (pop. 2,500) high desert town of Marfa added a hip art counterpoint to its cowboy heritage when NYC minimalist sculptor Donald Judd moved here in the 1970’s, buying the local decommissioned fort and other abandoned buildings and installing his work and others he admired. It is now one of the largest and most important permanent installations of contemporary art in America.
New owners remodeled this 1959-era motel, putting it on the cutting edge of Marfa hipness. The motel includes a film library and such things as Polaroid cameras, vintage typewriters and record players to borrow.
